Our Historical Milestones

1894

Founding Vision

The foundation stone for the first temple in the Malay Peninsula was laid, marking the birth of a spiritual sanctuary.

1895

Official Registration

The Śāsana Abhiwurdhi Wardhana Society (SAWS) was officially registered on New Year's Day, and the first monk arrived from British Ceylon.

1911

The Sacred Bodhi Tree

A sapling brought from the sacred city of Anuradhapura, Ceylon, was planted, establishing a living connection to the Buddha's enlightenment.

1971

Architectural Landmarks

Completion of the iconic 20-foot Sanchi-style gateway and the International Pagoda.

1992

Maha Vihara Status

The Brickfields Buddhist Temple was formally elevated to the status of Buddhist Maha Vihara.

The Sangha

The Sangha

Monks in this Vihara, primarily from Sri Lanka, live in strict accordance with the Vinaya (monastic discipline). They provide spiritual guidance, conduct blessings, and lead the community in Dhamma practice.

Our esteemed lineage includes the Late Ven. Dr. K. Sri Dhammananda and our current Chief High Priest, Ven. Datuk Kirinde Dhammaratana Maha Thera.
